Teej Festival 2017

Do you know what Teej Festival is and why do thousands of women all around northern India celebrate this auspicious festival?

This is one of the Hindu festivals, where women fast and pray to Goddess Paravati and Lord Shiva, seeking their blessing for having a happy married life. Frankly, this contains a series of festivals that occurs during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada and Shravana (Bhado & Sawan), which occurs in the month from August to September.

Origin of Teej:

According to history, it is believed that the festival gets its name from the tiny red insect known as Teej. This often emerges during the rainy season. As per the Hindu mythology, on this day, Paravati came to the residing place of Lord Shiva, highlighting the union of their marital relationship. Not only this festival symbolizes the reunion of Paravati and Shiva, it even showcases the various sacrifices a wife makes to win the heart and mind of her husband. As per myth, Goddess Paravati fasted for about 108 years to show her devotion and love to Lord Shiva, which made him to accept her as his wife.
