History of Raksha Bandhan:

Histories do explain the reason how Raksha Bandhan came into being. It started 1000s of years back during the period when rulers existed. As per the Indian tradition, it was started by princesses or queens, who tied a thread on the hands of their brothers and prayed for their victory and successful. It continued for various ages and now it still continues keeping the bond of brother and sister as strong and as ever.

The most famous story of the Raksha Bandhan is between Lord Krishna and Draupadi. When Lord Krishna was beheading King Shishupal, he cut off his finger. Immediately Draupadi, who was witnessed to this, came and tore off her piece of sari and tied around Lord Krishna’s wrist. In return, Lord Krishna did promise that in future, whenever Draupadi would be distress, he would protect her and repay her for her debt she had created on him. When time came, the promise was fulfilled as she was saved from the embarrassment when she was disrobed in public by Kauravas. This story is said to be one of the origins of Raksha Bandhan festival.

This tradition has been passed on generations and generations and it still exists in today’s times. Even you could find this practice being followed by non-Hindus too in their lives too. The festival is not confined to any particular religion as there is only one thing that needs to be considered i.e true love for a sister to her brother.
