Guru Nanak Jayanti 2017

Among the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Jayanti - the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of the faith - is an occasion for great rejoicing. The day is celebrated by Sikhs in India and all over the world with much fervor and devotion. Guru Nanak was born in 1469 AD at Tolevandi (near Lahore), and his birth anniversary is celebrated with much pomp and religious zeal across the Sikh community, especially in the Punjab region. Gurpurab or Guru Nanak’s birthday normally falls in the month of November on a full moon day.

Two days before Guru Nank Jayanti, the high priests start reading the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs, and the reading goes on for 48 hours without a break - this recitation is called the ‘Akhand path’ and it culminates on the day of Guru Nank Jayanti. In the gurdwaras on the morning of Guru Nank Jayanti, the ‘asa di var’ or devotional hymns have been sung and then there is rejoicing. Diyas and lamps are lit, langars (free meals) are set up and food distributed, ‘prasad’ is made in large quantities and offered to all the people who come to the gurudwara. These meals are cooked by the devotees and the cleaning of the gurudwara is also undertaken by them - this is called ‘kar seva’. It is all about devotion and service.
